Therapeutic Action
First-generation H1 antihistamine with a rapid onset of action, acting as a competitive antagonist of histamine receptors.
Diphenhydramine is a potent antihistamine agent with antipruritic, anticholinergic (antispasmodic), antiemetic, and sedative properties.
Indications
First-line, rapid-acting treatment of acute dystonic reactions caused by antipsychotic medications (neuroleptics) in patients over 2 years of age.
Allergic reactions to blood or plasma, in anaphylaxis as an adjunct to epinephrine after acute symptoms are controlled, and for allergic conditions when oral therapy is impossible or contraindicated.
Instructions for use
Must be given by IV or IM route.
Posology in adult for treatment of acute laryngeal dystonia:
- 50 mg by IV or deep IM route.
- If administered by IM route, a second dose may be given after 30 min.
- Maximum daily dosage is 200 mg
Diphenydramine injectable may be used as an alternative to promethazine injectable in case of supply issue.
Precautions for Use
Contraindicated in case of :
- glaucoma
- urinary retention (of prostatic or other origin)
- decompensated heart disease
Contraindicated in neonates, premature infants, and in breast-feeding women.
Common side effects include somnolence (drowsiness), dizziness, and dry mouth.

- After opening, use the product immediately.
